Anglepoise lamps are iconic and instantly recognisable. They combine practicality with style and come in a wide variety of colours and designs so there really is one to match any décor. But, did you know that you can date your Anglepoise lamp by the design as the base and the shade were periodically changed.
The Anglepoise lamp was designed by George Carwardine in 1932 who then licenced the design to Herbert Terry and Sons, a manufacturer based in Redditch.
1932 The original prototype featured a square base with no step.
1935 The design featured a square base with three steps.
1938, One step was removed to make a two tiered base. This is the style you can see on our orange vintage Anglepoise lamp pictured which is now for sale. This base went on to be amended slightly over the following decades.
1968 A significant change – the square base was replaced with a round one and the shape of the shade was fluted.
1973 the shade featured an on/off switch on the back.
