Description
This reduction gear was salvaged from a WWII Spitfire Merlin engine which lay at the bottom of the sea for 40 years after the Spitfire aircraft itpowered crashed off the Dorset coast in November 1940. On recovery, very little remained of the aircraft due to the corrosive attack of sea water but the engine and propellers were buried in the mud and were in good condition.
Carefully cleaned back to its original glory, the reduction gear is a beautiful piece of iconic Rolls-Royce engineering. it has been mounted for display purposes on a wooden stand . It is a tactile piece and can be rotated for hands-on inspection.
